What Is the Purification of Water Chart Used For?

Water that looks clear is not necessarily safe, and this chart gives teachers a single reference for the methods used to purify it. Muddy water can be left to stand so that heavier particles settle (sedimentation) and the clear water poured off (decantation); adding alum helps the finer particles settle. Filtration through beds of sand and gravel removes suspended matter, as in the slow sand filters of water works. Germs are dealt with separately: boiling kills most of them, and chlorination with bleaching powder or chlorine tablets is a cheap way of disinfecting large volumes.

Dissolved salts need other methods. Distillation boils the water and condenses the steam, leaving the salts behind, while reverse osmosis forces water through a semi-permeable membrane against the natural direction of osmosis — the principle used in domestic RO purifiers. The chart supports lessons on separation of substances, water as a resource and public health, and links well to laboratory work on filtration and distillation. Its markable, washable surface lets students number the stages of a treatment sequence during a lesson.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — 10 charts minimum, each one sold individually.
  • Water resource set — the Water Harvesting chart from the same series covers collecting rain water.
  • Practical work — add a water treatment activity set or a water distillation unit for hands-on experiments.
  • Print check — the chart is listed in English only; ask for a larger image of the current print if you need to check the methods shown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which purification methods are shown on the chart?
The listing does not itemise the panels. Sedimentation, filtration, boiling, chlorination, distillation and reverse osmosis are the methods usually taught under this topic; JLab can send a larger image of the current print to confirm.

What is the difference between filtering and disinfecting water?
Filtering removes suspended particles that make water cloudy; disinfecting, by boiling or chlorination for example, kills disease-causing germs. Clear water can still contain germs, so both steps matter.

What is the chart printed on?
Coated art paper of 130 gsm, offset printed in full colour with CTP technology and laminated on both sides with 30 micron heat-sealable polyester; the chart weighs 228 g.

How is it hung, and what are its dimensions?
It hangs from plastic rollers. It measures 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in) and rolls to 58 x 4 x 2 cm.

What details are needed for an export quotation?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling instructions and any tender reference.
