What Is the Origin of Life Chart Used For?

The origin of life is often the opening topic of an evolution unit. Students first see why the old idea of spontaneous generation was abandoned after Louis Pasteur’s experiments, then meet the Oparin–Haldane hypothesis: on the early Earth, an atmosphere of gases such as methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water vapour, energised by lightning and ultraviolet light, produced simple organic molecules that collected in the seas and slowly combined into larger ones — a stage called chemical evolution. Stanley Miller and Harold Urey tested the idea by passing electric sparks through such a gas mixture and obtained amino acids. The story continues with droplet-like protocells, the first simple prokaryotic cells, photosynthetic prokaryotes that added oxygen to the atmosphere, and later the eukaryotes.

The chart supports the class 12 biology chapter on evolution and introductory college courses in evolutionary biology and biochemistry. Displayed with a tree-of-life poster or fossil specimens, it helps students connect chemical evolution with the later history of living things. Teachers can annotate the markable, washable surface during a lesson and clean it afterwards.
