What Is the Soil Formation and Soil Profile Chart Used For?

Every soil starts as solid rock. Weathering breaks that rock down: rain water seeps into cracks and expands as it freezes, repeated heating by day and cooling by night makes the surface layers crack, and wind and running water grind the loosened fragments against each other. Plant roots and burrowing animals widen the cracks, lichens release acids that attack the rock surface, and oxygen and water react with the minerals in chemical weathering. Dead plants and animals decay into humus, and over a very long time the mixture of mineral particles, humus, air and water becomes soil. The study of soil is called pedology.

Cut down through undisturbed ground and the soil shows distinct layers, or horizons, that together form the soil profile: a thin cover of leaf litter and partly decayed matter, a dark topsoil (A-horizon) rich in humus and roots, a paler subsoil (B-horizon) where minerals washed down from above collect, weathered parent rock (C-horizon) and finally bedrock. The chart backs up middle-school science lessons on soil, secondary geography lessons on soil as a resource and introductory agriculture courses, and because the surface is listed as markable and washable, a teacher can label the horizons during a lesson and clean the chart afterwards.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 charts, each sold individually.
  • Soil chart set — Types of Soils in India and Soil – A Natural Resource from the same series complete a soil display.
  • Hands-on material — add soil samples or a soil test kit so students can compare real soil with the profile on the wall.
  • Labels — the chart is listed in English only; ask JLab for a larger image of the current print if you need to check the wording.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this chart show?
As its title says, how soil is formed and the soil profile. The listing does not itemise the individual panels; the agents of weathering and the horizons from topsoil to bedrock are the parts usually taught, and JLab can send a larger image of the current print.

Which lessons is it suited to?
Middle-school science lessons on soil, secondary geography lessons on soil resources and introductory environmental science or agriculture classes, where students need to see the layers they cannot easily dig down to.

What material is the chart printed on?
130 gsm coated art paper, printed in full colour by offset using CTP technology and laminated on both sides with 30 micron heat-sealable polyester. It weighs 228 g.

Can students write on it?
Yes. The laminated surface is listed as markable and washable, so labels added during a lesson can be cleaned off afterwards.

How is it hung and stored?
It hangs on the wall from its plastic rollers and rolls up to 58 x 4 x 2 cm when it is put away.

What information does an export quotation need?
Send the quantity, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you prefer (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling needs and a tender reference if there is one.
