What Is the Radioactive Source Used For?
The three versions let students compare the main kinds of nuclear radiation. Alpha particles are stopped by a sheet of paper or a few centimetres of air, beta particles pass through paper but are absorbed by thin aluminium, and gamma rays penetrate much further and are only reduced by thick lead. With a G.M. counter, B.Sc. and M.Sc. physics students use such sources to compare penetrating power, to measure beta absorption in aluminium sheets and to test the inverse square law with a gamma source. Handle sources only with tongs, keep them at a distance from the body, return them to a shielded, locked store after use and follow your institution’s radiation-safety rules.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Version — beta, gamma or alpha, and how many of each.
- Isotope and activity — state any requirement from your syllabus or tender so it can be confirmed.
- Destination and paperwork — give the destination country, as the rules for receiving radioactive material differ by country.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which radioactive sources does JLab list?
Beta, gamma and alpha sources. Each is quoted separately, so state the version and quantity you need.
Which isotope and activity are supplied?
The listing does not state them. Ask JLab to confirm the isotope and activity of each version before you order.
Are there rules for buying or shipping a radioactive source?
Yes, most countries control the supply, transport and storage of radioactive material. Mention your destination country in the enquiry so JLab can advise on what that shipment needs.
Who manufactures these sources?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, lists them as made at its works in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for them directly.
