What Is the Digital G.M. Counter Used For?
A Geiger–Müller tube holds a gas at low pressure between two electrodes kept at a high voltage. Each ionising particle that enters the tube sets off a discharge, and the counter records it as one pulse; the presettable timer lets students count for an exact interval and work out the count rate. In B.Sc. and M.Sc. nuclear physics practicals the set is used to plot the characteristic curve of the G.M. tube and choose its operating voltage on the plateau, to study the absorption of beta particles in thin sheets, to check the inverse square law for gamma rays, and to show the random nature of radioactive decay from repeated counts. Teachers can also use it to demonstrate background radiation.
Always record a background count first and subtract it from each reading. Handle the source with tongs, never with fingers, keep it in a shielded container when not in use, and follow your institution’s radiation-safety rules for storage and record keeping.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Radioactive source — the set includes one source; state which type your experiments need, and ask about local rules for receiving a radioactive source.
- Spare G.M. tubes and handling tongs — add them to the same enquiry if you need spares.
- Input supply and quantity — the listing does not state the input supply, so confirm it with JLab; the minimum order is 10 units.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which radioactive source comes with the counter?
The listing states one radioactive source without naming its type in full. Tell JLab whether you need it for beta, gamma or alpha work so the source can be confirmed in the quotation.
What does the presettable timer do?
It sets the counting interval with a thumbwheel switch and shows it on a 3-digit display, so every count runs for the same time and count rates can be compared directly.
Are there rules for buying a radioactive source?
Yes, most countries control the supply, transport and storage of radioactive sources. Mention your destination country in the enquiry so JLab can advise what is needed for that shipment.
Who manufactures this counter?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of nuclear physics lab equipment and other physics instruments in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The counter is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers deal directly with the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Panama in Central America and the Caribbean, Lesotho in Southern Africa, Tonga in Oceania, the USA in North America and Myanmar in Southeast Asia. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
