Ratchet wrenches with small square openings like these are used mainly on refrigeration service valves, whose stems have square ends. Refrigeration Lab Practicals

In an RAC (refrigeration and air conditioning) trade lab, trainees learn to work a compressor service valve. They remove the cap, slacken the gland nut a little with a hex opening, then turn the square stem from back-seated to mid-position. A Manifold Gauges For Refrigeration Systems set on the service port can then read the pressure.

Before they touch a working system, students study the King Valves sectioned display, which shows what happens inside as the stem moves. Back-seated, the gauge port is shut. Front-seated, the line to the compressor is closed. After each exercise they retighten the gland nut and refit the cap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which size option should I order?
Choose by the stems and nuts on your equipment. Option 1 has hex openings of 9/16 and 1/2 in plus small square ones. Option 2 has four square sizes from 3/16 to 3/8 in, and option 3 the larger 3/8 and 1/2 in squares. Name the option in your enquiry.

How do I change the working direction?
Turn the wrench over. A ratchet drives one way only, so with the other face up it turns the stem the opposite way. Clockwise moves a valve stem in towards front-seat, and counterclockwise backs it out.

Why slacken the gland nut before turning the stem?
The gland, or packing, nut squeezes the seal round the stem. Slackening it a little lets the stem turn without tearing the packing. Retighten it once the stem is set, so refrigerant cannot leak past the stem.

Can I use pliers or an adjustable wrench on a valve stem?
It is better not to. The square end is small, and pliers or a loose wrench soon round its corners. A square opening of the exact size grips all four sides.
