What Is a Reading Telescope Used For?
A reading telescope lets a student read a scale, a pointer or a reference mark from across the bench without touching or disturbing the apparatus. In undergraduate physics it is used with the scale-and-telescope (optical lever) method for small deflections in elasticity and rigidity experiments, for reading lamp-and-scale or mirror-and-scale galvanometer and magnetometer set-ups, and for sighting heights and levels on a vertical scale. Because it focuses from about one metre out to infinity, it suits normal bench distances as well as distant targets.
The achromatic objective keeps the image free of strong colour fringes, and the Ramsden eyepiece has its focal plane in front of the lenses, which is why a cross-line graticule can sit there for precise sighting. To set it up, clamp the telescope to a retort stand at the height of the target, turn the eyepiece until the cross-lines are sharp, then use the rack and pinion until the scale is in focus with no parallax between scale and cross-lines. Keep the lens surfaces covered when not in use and clean them only with lens tissue.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Specification — this model, or tell JLab if you need a different specification, which the listing says is available.
- Mounting hardware — a retort stand and clamp to hold the telescope; add them to the enquiry.
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 telescopes, usually one per experiment station.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the optical specifications?
An achromatic objective of about 178 mm focal length with a 23 mm clear aperture, and an 8× Ramsden eyepiece fitted with a cross-line graticule.
How close can it focus?
The rack-and-pinion focusing covers about 1000 mm to infinity, so place the telescope at least that far from the scale you want to read.
How is the telescope mounted?
The listing states it can be mounted on a retort stand. The stand and clamp are not included and can be added from JLab’s separate listings.
Why does it have a Ramsden eyepiece?
A Ramsden eyepiece focuses on a plane just in front of its lenses, so a cross-line graticule can be placed there and seen sharply together with the image — what is needed for accurate sighting.
Are other specifications available?
Yes. The listing notes that reading telescopes come in different specifications; state your requirement in the enquiry.
What information is needed for an export quotation?
Send the quantity, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms you prefer (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling needs, and a tender reference if applicable.
Who manufactures this reading telescope?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) assembles it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an optics and physics lab instruments manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The telescope is built at its own works instead of being bought from a trader, so colleges, universities, schools, dealers and importers deal with the maker directly, each unit is inspected by eye before packing, and follow-up orders come from the same source. JLab holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 (manufacturing enterprise) and Importer-Exporter Code 3317504552. It exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — examples include Uganda in East Africa, Armenia in Eastern Europe, Honduras in Central America and the Caribbean, Jordan in the Middle East and Hong Kong in East Asia. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
Stands and Optical Instruments
- Iron Retort Stand — a cast iron base and rod for mounting the telescope.
- Retort Stand Clamp — grips the telescope tube on the stand rod.
- Travelling Microscope — a microscope moved along rails by a fine screw, for measuring small lengths.
- Astronomical Telescope — a two-lens refracting telescope model for teaching how telescopes form images.
