Workshop Practice: Holding a Saw for Filing
In carpentry classes, students learn to look after their own saws. They grip the blade in the clamp with the teeth just above the jaws. Then they run a Flat File lightly along the tops so every tooth is the same height. Next they bend alternate teeth out with Saw Teeth Setting Pliers, so the saw cuts a kerf wider than the blade.
Finally they file each gullet with a triangular file from the Saw Sharpening File Set, using the same count of strokes every time. A test cut in a scrap board then shows whether the saw runs straight and cuts freely.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far should the teeth stand above the jaws?
Set the gullets just clear of the jaws, so the file never touches the steel of the clamp. If the blade stands too high it vibrates and screeches under the file, and the stroke is harder to control.
How much of the saw does the clamp hold at once?
The mouth is 200 mm wide, so it grips that length of the blade at one time. File the teeth along that stretch, release the lever, slide the saw along and clamp it again for the next section.
How is the clamp held during use?
The clamp sits on a solid wood board. The board can be gripped in a Bench Vice or clamped to the bench top, which keeps the saw steady at a comfortable height for filing.
Can it hold both rip and cross cut saws?
Yes. The clamp only holds the blade, and the tooth shape comes from the way the teeth are filed. One clamp therefore serves every hand saw in the shop, whichever tooth pattern it has.
