Aluminium Brazing Practicals
A common bench exercise is a lap joint between two strips of Aluminium Sheet. Students scrub the joint area bright with a stainless Wire Brush and apply the powder Flux made for aluminium rod. They heat the work, not the rod, until the rod melts on touching the metal and flows into the joint.
The same method repairs a pinhole in an aluminium tube or a cracked casting. Teachers use the job to show how a fuel-gas torch such as the MAPP set brings thin aluminium up to heat quickly. They also show why the part is clamped, so nothing moves while the filler sets.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what temperature do these rods melt?
They melt at 700 °F, about 371 °C. That is well below the melting point of aluminium, so the parts stay solid while the filler flows. Heat the joint until the rod melts when pressed against the hot metal.
Do I need a gas welding set for these rods?
No. A hand torch burning propane or a MAP-type gas gives enough heat for thin sections. Thick or large parts lose heat fast, so they may need a bigger flame or some preheating before the rod will flow.
Why must the aluminium be cleaned first?
Aluminium carries a thin, tough oxide layer that stops the filler from wetting the surface. Brush it off with a stainless steel brush just before brazing, because fresh oxide starts to form again straight away.
Is this brazing or soldering?
Trade usage calls these rods brazing rods. Strictly, joining below 450 °C counts as soldering, and these rods melt at about 371 °C, so the process sits at the soldering end of the scale.
