Bronze rod is melted into a joint with an oxy-acetylene flame to braze-weld steel, cast iron, copper and brass. The parts are brought to a dull red heat but are not melted themselves. This bronze rod comes in sticks of 0.045 in x 36 in, packed 50 to a tube, and is used with a separate flux.

Braze Welding Exercises for Students

In the gas welding bay, students braze-weld two lengths of Angle Iron into a corner joint. The steel is cleaned bright and the Gas Welding Plant is set to a slightly oxidising flame. The joint is heated to a dull red. The hot end of the rod is then dipped in Sif Flux and run along the joint as a smooth fillet.

A second exercise joins Galvanized Steel Sheet, where the lower heat of braze welding burns off less of the zinc coating than fusion welding. Students can then set a bronze joint beside a copper pipe joint made with the phosphor-copper Brazing Rod, and see why each alloy suits its own metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which flux does a bronze rod need?
A flux made for bronze rod, such as the powder flux used in the exercise above. Heat the end of the rod and dip it in the powder so a coat sticks to it. A little flux is also spread on the joint before the rod goes in.

What flame setting should I use?
Bronze is usually run with a slightly oxidising flame, which carries a little more oxygen than a neutral flame. Keep the inner cone off the molten pool and heat the parent metal just ahead of the rod.

Which metals can it join?
Bronze braze welding joins mild steel, cast iron, galvanised steel, copper and brass. It can also join two different metals, such as steel to copper. Aluminium is not joined this way and needs its own rod, such as the Aluminum Rod, with its own flux.

How is it different from the phosphor-copper rod?
The phosphor-copper rod makes thin capillary joints on copper pipe and needs no flux there. This bronze rod builds a fillet on steel and cast iron and always needs a flux. Choose the rod by the metals being joined.

How should the joint be prepared?
Clean the faces to bright metal with a wire brush or file and remove any oil. Bevel the edges of thicker sections so the bronze can fill the joint, and clamp the parts so they stay still while the fillet cools.
