SCR Lamp Flasher (code EL-PET-1429) is a power electronics training board on the use of SCRs in a DC lamp flasher and a TRIAC in an AC flasher. Two SCRs triggered by a UJT relaxation oscillator form a symmetrical DC flasher, and the same DC flasher switches a TRIAC on and off to flash an incandescent lamp from the AC mains. What Is the SCR Lamp Flasher Board Used For?
A flasher needs a switch that turns a lamp on and off at a steady rate. In a symmetrical two-SCR DC flasher of this kind, pulses from the UJT oscillator fire the SCRs alternately and each one turns the other off as it switches on, which the two LEDs show as a twin-lamp flasher. The board then shows how a low-power DC circuit can control a high-power AC load, with the flasher driving a TRIAC in the mains circuit. Flashers of this type are used in warning beacons, indicator lamps and illuminated signs, and the board makes a compact exercise in thyristor triggering for power electronics students.

How is the flash rate changed?
With the potentiometer for frequency variation. The repetition rate of the flasher follows the frequency of the UJT relaxation oscillator, so changing the oscillator frequency changes the flash rate.
What does the AC flasher switch?
A 230 V, 40 W lamp on the board, switched by a 4 A / 400 PIV TRIAC that the SCR DC flasher turns on and off. Each flasher has its own toggle switch.
What other apparatus is required?

How does it differ from the SCR Ring Counter?
The SCR Ring Counter switches three SCR stages in sequence from an external DC source and can also be run as a sequential flasher. The SCR Lamp Flasher has two SCRs for a symmetrical DC flasher plus a TRIAC for a high-power AC flasher, and runs from the AC mains.
