Lamp Dimmer Using Diac and Triac (code EL-PET-1440) is a power electronics training board for studying how a diac and a triac control the brightness of a lamp through AC phase control. The board has its own isolation transformer giving 230 V AC at 200 mA, a lamp load and a potentiometer that sets the lamp intensity. It is manufactured in Ambala, India, by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab).

How Does It Compare with the Triac and AC Phase Control Board?
| Board | Experiments | Potentiometers | Other apparatus required | Weight (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This board (EL-PET-1440) | Lamp dimmer using a diac and a triac | Potentiometer for lamp intensity | None (self-contained) | 6 kg |
| Triac and AC Phase Control | Triac characteristics in four modes, gate control with NPN and PNP transistors, phase control with a triac and diac, light dimmer with hysteresis and gate slaving, RFI suppression | Two, for biasing and phase control | Digital multimeter, IC regulated power supply, dual trace oscilloscope | 3 kg |
Choose this board for a dedicated dimmer experiment that runs without any other instruments. The Triac and AC Phase Control board treats the dimmer as one of several triac experiments and is used with a multimeter, a power supply and an oscilloscope.
What Is the Diac and Triac Lamp Dimmer Used For?
A triac conducts in both directions once it is triggered and switches off near the end of each half cycle, when its current falls towards zero. In a diac–triac dimmer the potentiometer sets how far into each half cycle the voltage on the diac reaches its breakover level; the diac then conducts suddenly and fires the triac, which passes the rest of that half cycle to the lamp. Moving the potentiometer shifts this firing point, which changes the average power in the lamp and so its brightness. Science and engineering students use the board to see phase control working on a real lamp load, the same principle used in household light dimmers.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — how many dimmer boards are needed.
- Companion boards — other triac, SCR or motor-control trainers to be quoted together.
- Destination — the delivery country and city or port.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a diac used to trigger the triac?
A diac blocks until the voltage across it reaches its breakover value and then conducts abruptly, in either direction. That gives the triac a sharp gate pulse in both the positive and the negative half cycles, so the lamp is controlled evenly over the whole AC wave.
Is any other apparatus needed?
No. The board is self-contained and requires no other apparatus for the dimmer experiment.
What is the isolation transformer for?
An isolation transformer gives an AC output that is electrically separate from the mains supply, so a circuit fed from it has no direct connection to the supply line or neutral. The one on this board is rated 230 V AC at 200 mA.
How does it differ from the Triac and AC Phase Control board?
This board is dedicated to the diac–triac lamp dimmer, while the Triac and AC Phase Control board covers a wider set of triac experiments, of which the light dimmer is one. The comparison table above sets out the other differences.
What should an export enquiry give?
The number of boards, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms required (FOB, CIF or another term), any packing or labelling needs and the tender reference if there is one.
Who manufactures the lamp dimmer board?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, which trades as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an electronic lab instruments and trainer manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Its CIN is U29309HR2017PTC069123, and it is registered as a manufacturing enterprise under MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849. The dimmer board is made at JLab’s own works, not bought from a trader, so colleges, institutes, dealers and importers get it straight from the manufacturer, each board is visually inspected before dispatch and repeat orders are made by the same works. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Cambodia in Southeast Asia, Chile in South America, Panama in Central America and the Caribbean, Botswana in Southern Africa and Fiji in Oceania. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
