What Is the Stream Table Kit Used For?
A stream table lets a class watch, in an hour, processes that shape real river valleys over thousands of years. Students fill the tray with sand or fine sediment, raise one end on the support, and let water run down the slope: the flow cuts a channel, carries sediment away and drops it where it slows, building small deltas and fans at the lower end, while bends grow into meanders. By changing the slope or the flow and comparing results, they see why steep, fast streams erode more and gentle ones deposit more, and they can follow a stream from a narrow, steep-sided young valley to a wider, winding mature one — the “stream as it ages” that the kit is designed to show. The topic fits landforms made by running water in class 11 physical geography, school units on rivers and erosion, and introductory geomorphology and hydrology in college.
The drain trough leads the water off the tray and the siphon tube moves water over a rim to a lower container without a pump once the tube is full. The kit works on a classroom bench or outdoors; when used indoors, place a bucket at the outlet and protect the floor. Rinse and dry the tray after use so sediment does not stay in it.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 kits; one kit per group of students is a common plan.
- Sediment and water — sand or sediment is not listed in the kit, so plan to source it locally or ask JLab.
- Supporting charts — river and landform charts and models (linked below) can be added to the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What comes in the Stream Table Kit?
A semi-rigid plastic tray, a drain trough, a tray support, a siphon tube and a teacher’s guide, with a 1.9 m pipe supplied.
How large is the tray?
The main tray measures 1225 mm x 370 mm. The support plate is 275 mm x 120 mm and the drain chute 915 mm x 115 mm.
Is sand included?
Sand or other sediment is not listed as part of the kit. Most schools use clean, fine sand; ask JLab if you would like it quoted.
What can students learn with it?
How running water erodes, transports and deposits sediment, how channels, meanders and deltas form, and how a stream changes as it ages. Students create their own landforms and test the effect of slope and flow.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes. The kit is intended for use in the classroom or as an outdoor activity.
What details should an export enquiry include?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling instructions, and a tender reference if applicable.
Who manufactures the Stream Table Kit?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of geography lab models and earth science teaching equipment, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The stream table kit is made in JLab’s own works, not traded, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers are quoted by the manufacturer, every kit is checked by eye before packing, and repeat orders and replacement parts come from the same works. JLab exports worldwide and has buyers in every region — for example Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean, Botswana in Southern Africa, Algeria in North Africa, Norway in Northern Europe and Germany in Western Europe. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
Rivers and Landforms Teaching Aids
- Streams (Rivers) Charts — how a stream is formed and works as a collecting, transporting and dispersing system.
- Landforms Model For Earth Science Lab — a set of durable, natural-colour landform models.
- Water Cycle Model — students reproduce evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
- Testing Ponds and Streams Kit — tests real stream water for alkalinity, phosphates, pH and nitrates/nitrite.
