What Is the Suicidal Gunshot Model Used For?
The first lesson with any gunshot wound is range. In a contact shot the muzzle may leave its imprint on the skin, soot is driven into the wound and the edges can be torn and burnt. At close range the skin around the entry shows blackening from soot, burning, and tattooing (stippling) from unburnt powder grains, and these spread wider as the distance grows. A distant shot shows none of these marks around the entry wound.
Textbooks then list the findings that favour suicide: a contact or near-contact wound at a part of the body the person could reach, usually a single shot, the weapon present at the scene — sometimes still gripped in cadaveric spasm — gunshot residue on the hand, and no defence wounds. Students also learn that no single sign is decisive and that the conclusion rests on the scene, the autopsy, ballistics and the history together. The model supports these discussions in forensic medicine departments and in forensic science and police training.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the range of fire judged from the wound?
By the marks around the entry: a muzzle imprint and soot inside the wound point to contact, soot and stippling on the skin to close range, and their absence to a distant shot.
Which findings suggest a gunshot was self-inflicted?
A contact or near-contact wound within the person's reach, usually one shot, the weapon at the scene, residue on the hand and no defence wounds — weighed together, never alone.
Who makes the gunshot wound model?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of biology lab equipment and forensic teaching models, incorporated in 2017 and working from Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Because the model is made at JLab's own works and not bought in from a trader, colleges, training institutes, dealers and importers buy from the manufacturer, and each piece is inspected by eye before packing. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Niger in West Africa, Singapore in Southeast Asia, Sudan in North Africa, Canada in North America and Lithuania in Northern Europe.
