How Does It Compare with Other JLab Thin-Section Sets?

SetSlidesSubjects listedMounting stated
This set (EL-ERAM-4342)20Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, from anthracite to slateNot stated
Thin Section of Minerals20Minerals such as amethyst, beryl, fluorite, galena, muscovite, orthoclase, pyrite and tourmalineGlass slides and covers with transparent glue
Thin Section of Rocks & Minerals20Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks; the rock list given is the same as this setGlass slides and covers with transparent glue

Choose this set when the course is about rock types and textures; pick the minerals set for optical mineralogy, where single minerals are identified rather than whole rocks.

What Is the Thin Section of Rocks Set Used For?

A thin section is a slice of rock ground so thin that light passes through it, which turns an opaque hand specimen into something a microscope can resolve grain by grain. With this set, students compare the three rock groups directly. The igneous slides show how cooling rate controls crystal size: coarse, interlocking crystals in granite, gabbro and diorite that cooled slowly underground, fine grains in basalt and rhyolite that cooled quickly at the surface, and large crystals set in a fine groundmass in porphyry. The sedimentary slides show cemented grains and fragments in sandstone and conglomerate, very fine particles in shale, and the fine silica of flint. The metamorphic slides show recrystallised, interlocking grains in marble and quartzite and the aligned minerals of gneiss and slate.

The slides can be examined with an ordinary compound microscope for texture, while a polarising microscope with crossed polars brings out interference colours and extinction for identifying the minerals. They support geology and earth science practicals in colleges and universities, geography and earth science teaching in senior school, and teacher-training labs. Handle the slides by their edges, keep them in a slide box away from dust, and wipe the cover surface only with lens tissue.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Set type — rocks only (this set), minerals, or the rocks and minerals set.
  • Rock list — the listing ends with “etc.”, so ask for the current slide list if particular rocks are required by your syllabus.
  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
  • Microscope and storage — add a polarising microscope or other rock collections to the same enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many slides are in the set?
Twenty. They cover igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, so all three groups can be compared in one practical.

Which rocks are included?
The twenty rocks named in the specification table, from anthracite to slate. Because the original list ends with “etc.”, confirm the exact slides in your quotation if a syllabus names particular rocks.

Do I need a polarising microscope?
Not for basic work. Grain size, texture and layering can be seen with a standard compound microscope, but mineral identification by interference colours and extinction needs a polarising microscope with crossed polars.

How is this set different from the Thin Section of Rocks & Minerals set?
Both have 20 slides, and the rocks named on that page are the same as here. That listing also states that its slides are mounted on glass slides with covers and transparent glue; this listing does not describe the mounting, so ask JLab if this matters for your order.

What should an export enquiry include?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling needs, and any tender reference.

Who manufactures this set?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of educational lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This rock slide set is prepared at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct, each set is inspected visually before it is packed, and repeat or replacement sets come from the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Congo in Central Africa, Jamaica in Central America and the Caribbean, Moldova in Eastern Europe, Kuwait in the Middle East and Fiji in Oceania are examples. For institutional purchasing, see the JLab lab tenders page.
