Workshop Practice at the Bench
Most first-year fitting jobs are done at a bench like this. A Bench Vice is bolted at each side, and trainees face each other across the beech top. They saw a mild steel blank to size with a Hacksaw, then file it flat and square with Engineers Flat Files. Each one keeps marking tools and files in the drawers on their own side.
Instructors use the first lesson to set the working height. The vice jaws should sit close to the trainee’s elbow when standing upright, so the file can be pushed level. Shorter students may stand on a platform, while the bench itself stays at its 850 mm height.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the bench dimensions?
The bench is 1200 mm long, 800 mm wide and 850 mm high. The beech worktop is 40 mm thick and rests on U-steel legs, with drawers on both long sides.
Can two people work at it at the same time?
Yes. It is a double workbench with drawers on both sides. Two trainees can work facing each other, each at their own vice and with drawers for their own tools.
Where should the bench vice be fitted?
Bolt it through the worktop close to a leg, where the bench is stiffest, with the fixed jaw just clear of the bench edge. Long work can then hang down past the edge without touching the top.
How should the beech top be looked after?
Wipe off oil, coolant and swarf at the end of each session. Do not hammer directly on the wood; use a steel block for heavy blows. A thin coat of oil now and then keeps the beech from drying and cracking.
