What Is the Yog Mudrasan, Padmasan and Matsyasan Chart Used For?
The three postures on this chart belong together. Padmasan, the lotus pose, is the classic seated posture for meditation and pranayama: the legs are crossed with each foot resting on the opposite thigh. Yog Mudrasan starts from the lotus seat, with the hands clasped behind the back, and folds the body forward to bring the forehead towards the floor. Matsyasan, the fish pose, is a backward arch — lying back, lifting the chest and resting the crown of the head on the floor — and is traditionally taught as the counter-pose to the shoulder stand. Teachers use the chart to show the shape of each posture to a whole class before students try it and to keep the order in view during practice.
Full lotus places strong demands on the knees and hips, so beginners should not force it; an easier cross-legged seat is a sensible starting point, and students with knee, back or neck problems, or any other health condition, should follow the advice of a doctor or experienced yoga teacher.
