What Is the Artificial Respiration Chart Used For?

Suffocation happens when the body cannot get enough oxygen — for example when the airway is blocked, or after smoke inhalation or drowning. The chart links that idea to an outline of the respiratory system and then shows three manual methods of artificial respiration: Schafer’s and Holger Nielsen’s, which are carried out with the casualty lying face down, and Silvester’s, carried out with the casualty on the back.

These are historical methods. Current first-aid courses no longer teach them and instead train rescue breaths combined with chest compressions (CPR). The chart is therefore most useful for teaching the respiratory system, the history of first aid and how resuscitation practice has changed, alongside a current CPR chart and manikin practice — not as the reference for a present-day resuscitation course. The laminated surface wipes clean, and the rollers make it easy to hang and store.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Current-practice materials — add the Emergency Resuscitation Chart or a CPR training manikin if the chart will be used in a first-aid course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which methods of artificial respiration does the chart show?
Schafer’s method, Silvester’s method and Holger Nielsen’s method, together with an outline of the respiratory system and what suffocation is.

Are these methods still taught?
No. They are older manual methods that current first-aid courses have replaced with rescue breaths and chest compressions. Use the chart for biology and first-aid history, and teach resuscitation from current guidance.

Can it be used in a biology lesson on breathing?
Yes. The outline of the respiratory system and the explanation of suffocation fit lessons on breathing and the respiratory organs.

What size is the chart, and how is it finished?
It measures 50 x 75 cm, has thick plastic film laminated on both sides and is fitted with plastic rollers.
