What Is Cellophane Used For in the Lab?
Porous cellophane behaves as a semi-permeable membrane: water and small molecules such as glucose or iodine pass through it, while large molecules such as starch stay behind. That makes it a low-cost membrane for the osmosis and diffusion topics in class 9 science and class 11 biology. In one common demonstration, a cellophane bag of starch solution is placed in dilute iodine; iodine moves in and the starch inside turns blue-black. In another, cellophane is tied over the mouth of a thistle funnel filled with sugar solution, the funnel is inverted in a beaker of water, and the liquid level in the stem rises as water moves in by osmosis.
Cut the film with clean scissors, soak it briefly in water so it becomes flexible, and tie it tightly with thread or a rubber band so there are no leaks at the edge. Avoid creasing it sharply or touching it with sharp glass edges, and keep unused film flat, dry and away from heat.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units; plan enough for each practical group to repeat the experiment.
- Grade — if your method calls for a particular thickness or pore size, state it so JLab can confirm what is supplied.
- Apparatus for the set-up — add thistle funnels, beakers or an osmosis kit to the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is porous cellophane used for in a school lab?
It is used as a semi-permeable membrane in osmosis and diffusion demonstrations, for example a starch–iodine bag or a thistle funnel osmometer, so students can see water or small molecules cross a membrane.
What size is it?
The listed size is 20 x 35.5 cm. Thickness and pore size are not stated, so mention any grade your experiment needs in the enquiry and JLab will confirm before quoting.
How is it different from dialysis membrane tubing?
Cellophane is a flat film that you cut and tie over a funnel or fold into a bag. Dialysis membrane tubing, listed separately, is a seamless regenerated cellulose tube, so a sealed bag is made simply by knotting both ends.
Who manufactures this cellophane?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, produces it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of school science apparatus and lab consumables, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This cellophane comes from JLab’s own works rather than from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct, each order is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat supplies are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Iceland in Northern Europe, the USA in North America, North Macedonia in Southern Europe, Japan in East Asia and Eswatini in Southern Africa. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
Osmosis and Diffusion Apparatus
- Thistle Funnel — the long-stem funnel used with a membrane for simple osmosis demonstrations.
- Dialysis Membrane Tubing — seamless regenerated cellulose tubing for dialysis and osmosis experiments.
- Osmosis and Diffusion Kit — a hands-on kit for observing the selective permeability of a membrane.
- Osmosis and Diffusion Lab — a guided activity on solute movement across a semi-permeable membrane.
