What Is the Data Re-Conditioning Kit Used For?

At the receiver, a keyed carrier has to be turned back into a baseband bit stream, and that stream then decoded from its line code. Working through both stages lets students compare how amplitude-, frequency- and phase-keyed signals are recovered.

How does each demodulator recover the data?
An ASK signal is rectified so that its envelope follows the on-off carrier. For FSK, a phase-locked loop tracks the input frequency and its control voltage changes with each shift. PSK needs a phase reference: a squaring loop removes the phase reversals, giving a component at twice the carrier frequency that is divided down to rebuild the carrier.

Why is the receiver clock generated with a PLL?
The decoder must sample each bit at the right moment, so it needs a clock locked to the incoming data rather than a free-running one; the PLL provides it.
