What Is the Line Coding and Decoding Kit Used For?
A line code sets how ones and zeros appear as voltage levels on a baseband link. With coding and decoding on one kit, students can send the same bit pattern through each format, compare the waveforms and check that the decoder returns the original bits.

What is the difference between NRZ-L, NRZ-M and NRZ-S?
In NRZ-L the level itself shows the bit. In NRZ-M a one is sent as a change of level and a zero as no change; NRZ-S does the reverse, changing level for a zero.
Why does the decoder need a PLL clock?
Decoding needs a clock in step with the incoming data. A PLL locks onto transitions in the received signal to regenerate it, so formats with frequent transitions, such as Manchester, are easier to decode.
How does it differ from the Data Conditioning and Data Re-Conditioning Kits?
The Data Conditioning Kit codes the same eight formats and adds ASK, FSK and PSK modulation; the Data Re-Conditioning Kit decodes them and demodulates ASK, FSK and PSK. This kit carries both the coding and the decoding of the eight formats.
