Heavier fixings call for a bigger plug. The 10 mm fisher is the biggest of our three plastic wall plug sizes. It is 5 cm long and takes the thickest screws of the range. Workshops use it for wall cupboards, loaded tool racks and timber battens fixed to brick or concrete. Each pack contains 100 plugs.

Practicals in Wall Fixing and Drilling

Wall fixing practicals in ITI and diploma workshops often use a brick or concrete test panel. Students mark a hole, put a depth mark on the bit a little beyond 5 cm and drill with the Rotary Hammer Drill. An Engineers Square held against the panel shows whether the bit is square to the face.

With the plugs set, they screw a short timber batten to the panel and hang tools from it, such as the Hacksaw and the Engineers Flat Files. The batten is a quick check on the drilling. If one hole went in at an angle, the batten is pulled out of line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hole does the 10 mm fisher need?
Drill a 10 mm hole with a masonry bit and take it slightly deeper than 5 cm. Clear the dust before pressing the plug in, because packed dust stops it from going fully home.

Is a bigger plug always stronger?
A larger plug grips more of the hole wall, so in sound brick or concrete it holds more than a small one. The wall still sets the limit. Crumbling brick or old mortar holds poorly whatever the plug size.

Should I fix into the brick or the mortar joint?
Fix into the brick or block where you can. Mortar is usually softer and can crumble around the plug, which lets it turn in the hole or pull out under load.

When is an anchor bolt better than a wall plug?
For machine brackets, heavy frames and similar loads in concrete, a metal anchor bolt is the usual choice. Our Anchor Bolt is made in stainless steel with M10 and M12 threads.
