What Is the Loop Holder Used For?
An inoculating loop is a short length of fine wire, usually nichrome or platinum, bent into a small ring at the tip; the holder grips the straight end of that wire so it can be used with a steady hand. Microbiology students use it to pick up a colony or a drop of broth, streak a plate for isolated colonies, transfer cultures between tubes and spread a thin film for a stained smear. In aseptic technique the wire is heated to red heat in a Bunsen or spirit-lamp flame before and after every transfer and allowed to cool for a few seconds before it touches the culture; the long rod and ebonite handle keep the user’s fingers well away from the flame, as ebonite is a poor conductor of heat.
To fit a wire, loosen the screw chuck, push the straight end into the head and tighten it again; the head is adjustable, and wires up to 20 SWG thick can be used, finer wires carrying higher SWG numbers. Wipe the rod and handle clean after a session and replace the loop wire when the ring loses its shape.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 holders; most labs issue one per student or per bench.
- Loop wire — say whether you need wire with the holders, and its material and gauge (up to 20 SWG).
- Flame source and media ware — add Bunsen burners, spirit lamps or petri dishes to the same enquiry if the lab is being equipped.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size of wire does this loop holder take?
Wires not coarser than 20 SWG, which is about 0.91 mm in diameter. Thinner wires, with higher SWG numbers, also fit, because the nickel-plated head is adjustable and closes with a screw chuck.
How long is the loop holder, and what is it made of?
It is 9 inches (about 229 mm) long, with an ebonite handle, a nickel-plated brass rod and a nickel-plated adjustable head.
Is the inoculating loop wire included?
The listing describes the holder only and does not state that a wire is supplied. Mention in your enquiry if you need loop wire, and in which material.
Why does a loop holder have an ebonite handle?
Ebonite conducts heat poorly, so the handle stays comfortable while the wire at the other end is flamed to red heat between transfers.
How is the loop sterilised between uses?
By heating the wire to red heat in a Bunsen or spirit-lamp flame, then letting it cool briefly before touching the culture. Flaming again after use stops organisms being carried onto the bench.
Who manufactures the loop holder?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of biology, microbiology and general science laboratory equipment, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The loop holder is made at JLab’s own works instead of being bought from a trader, so colleges, schools, dealers and importers order it factory-direct; every holder is checked visually before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the maker. JLab exports worldwide and can supply buyers in every region, for instance Hong Kong in East Asia, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, Oman in the Middle East, New Zealand in Oceania and Germany in Western Europe.
