What Is the Power Factor Meter Used For?
Power factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power in an AC circuit: it reaches unity for a purely resistive load and falls when the current lags the voltage, as with induction motors, transformers and chokes. This meter shows the value directly, so students need not calculate it from separate voltmeter, ammeter and wattmeter readings. In electrical engineering, diploma and ITI labs it is used in experiments on inductive loads and on power factor correction, where capacitors are switched in and the reading moves towards unity.
