What Is the Rickets Model Used For?

In rickets the new bone formed at a child’s growth plates is not properly mineralised with calcium and phosphate, so it stays soft and weak. Lack of vitamin D is the usual cause, since the vitamin is needed to absorb calcium from food; too little calcium or phosphate in the diet can also be responsible. Typical signs include bowed legs or knock knees once the child walks, thickened wrists and ankles, a row of bumps along the ribs known as the “rachitic rosary”, and slow growth. A model makes these changes visible to a whole class and leads into how skin makes vitamin D in sunlight and which foods — oily fish, egg yolk, fortified milk — supply it. In school it suits the class 6 topic on components of food, where rickets is the standard vitamin D deficiency disease. It is a teaching aid and does not replace medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rickets and osteomalacia?
Both come from poor bone mineralisation. Rickets occurs in children whose bones are still growing, so it causes deformities such as bowed legs; osteomalacia is the adult form.

Who manufactures it?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes it in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it directly.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of biology lab equipment and health-education models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy direct and every unit is visually inspected before it ships. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Namibia in Southern Africa, Canada in North America, Iceland in Northern Europe, Taiwan in East Asia and Belize in Central America and the Caribbean.
