What Is the Toxoplasma Life Cycle Model Used For?
Toxoplasma gondii belongs to the apicomplexan protozoa, the same group as the malaria parasite. Cats and other members of the cat family are the definitive host: the parasite reproduces sexually in the cat’s intestine, and the cat sheds oocysts in its faeces, which become infective in soil after a few days. Other animals and people are intermediate hosts. In them, fast-dividing tachyzoites spread through the body, and the parasite then settles as slow-growing bradyzoites inside tissue cysts in muscle and brain.
People become infected by eating undercooked meat that holds tissue cysts, by swallowing oocysts from cat litter, soil, unwashed produce or water, or before birth when a mother is first infected during pregnancy. Most infections in healthy adults pass with mild or no symptoms, but the parasite can harm an unborn baby and cause serious disease when immunity is weak. The model helps students follow these routes and the hygiene measures that block them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not name them. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the stages and labels before ordering.
Why are cats central to the life cycle?
Only in cats does Toxoplasma reproduce sexually and form oocysts, so cats are the definitive host and the source of the oocysts that contaminate soil and water.
Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian maker of microbiology and parasitology teaching models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. JLab builds this model in its own works rather than reselling a trader’s stock, so colleges, veterinary schools, dealers and importers buy from the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Canada in North America, Nepal in South Asia, Ghana in West Africa, Oman in the Middle East and Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean.
