Workshop Exercises with Large Threads
Bigger threads come up in jobs such as a vice screw, a clamp or a tie rod for a frame. Students drill the tapping hole on the Pillar Drill Machine, then cut the thread by hand with the tap wrench, keeping it level with both hands.
For the external thread, the end of the round bar is chamfered with one of the Engineers Flat Files so the die starts square. The job is done on a firm Work Bench, with the bar held short in the vice so it does not bend.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the larger sizes need more care than small taps?
Each turn of a large tap removes more metal and needs more force. Use both hands on the wrench, keep it level and turn back often to clear the chips. A tap forced at an angle cuts a crooked thread.
Which side of the die should face the work?
Start with the side that has the tapered lead threads against the chamfered end of the rod. The lead lets the die bite gradually and start square, and the full threads behind it then cut the thread to size.
How is the split die set in the die stock?
Seat the die in the stock with its split in line with the centre screw. Tighten the centre screw to open the die for a first pass, then ease it and tighten the side screws to close the die for the final cut.
Can a blind hole be tapped to its full depth?
Yes, with the bottoming tap, used after the taper and second taps. Drill the hole deeper than the thread you need, because chips gather at the bottom and the last threads cannot be cut right to the end.
What does HSS mean?
HSS stands for high speed steel, a tool steel that keeps its hardness when it gets hot. Hand taps and dies made from it cut mild steel, brass and aluminium in the workshop.
