What Is the Ultrasonic Diffraction Experiment Used For?
The RF oscillator drives the piezoelectric crystal at its resonant frequency, and the crystal sends ultrasonic waves through the liquid in the tank. The regular compressions and rarefactions change the liquid’s refractive index periodically, so the liquid acts as a diffraction grating whose spacing equals the ultrasonic wavelength (the Debye–Sears effect). Light from the sodium lamp passes through the spectrometer’s collimator and the tank, and the telescope shows a central image with diffraction orders on each side. Measuring the angle of each order and using the known wavelength of sodium light in the grating equation gives the ultrasonic wavelength; multiplying it by the oscillator frequency gives the velocity of ultrasound in the liquid. Repeating the measurement with different liquids lets students compare them.
The experiment is a standard B.Sc. physics practical on ultrasonics and also features in engineering physics labs. Tune the oscillator carefully for the sharpest diffraction pattern, keep the tank level and free of bubbles, and let the sodium lamp warm up to full brightness before reading.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Spares — ask for a spare sodium lamp or crystal if your lab runs the experiment often.
- Existing spectrometer — if your lab already has one, ask JLab whether the set can be quoted without it.
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this apparatus measure?
The velocity of ultrasonic waves in a liquid, found from the diffraction of sodium light by the ultrasonic waves in the tank.
What is included in the set?
The listing describes a complete apparatus: an RF oscillator of 3–8 MHz, a crystal with tank, a spectrometer with a 9 inch bed, and a sodium lamp with its wooden box and transformer.
How is the velocity calculated?
The ultrasonic wavelength comes from the diffraction angles and the wavelength of sodium light; the velocity is that wavelength multiplied by the oscillator frequency.
Who manufactures this apparatus?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The ultrasonic diffraction set is assembled at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, universities, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct; every set is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spares are handled by the manufacturer. The company is registered under CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123 and is an MSME manufacturing enterprise with Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example El Salvador in Central America and the Caribbean, Peru in South America, Guinea in West Africa, Kenya in East Africa and Japan in East Asia. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
