How Does It Compare with Other JLab Transistor Trainers?

ModelConfigurationsMeters and supplies (as listed)Transistors
This apparatus (EL-SCD-1079)Common base and common emitter; input and output characteristicsFour round meters; two DC regulated suppliesOne PNP, one NPN
Transistor Characteristics Apparatus (aluminium panel)Common emitter and common base; input, output and transfer characteristicsAnalog moving-coil meters with a dual-range ammeter; inbuilt variable DC regulated suppliesPNP and NPN
Training Board for TransistorCommon emitter, common base and common collectorTwo digital voltmeters and two digital current meters; two continuously variable DC suppliesSilicon NPN and PNP plus germanium NPN and PNP

Choose this apparatus for the classic common base and common emitter characteristics of one PNP and one NPN transistor on analogue round meters. The aluminium-panel model adds transfer characteristics, and the training board suits labs that want digital meters, the common collector mode and a silicon–germanium comparison.

What Is the Transistor Characteristics Apparatus Used For?

Characteristic curves show how a bipolar junction transistor behaves before it is used in a circuit. In common base, students plot emitter current against emitter–base voltage at a fixed collector–base voltage (input) and collector current against collector–base voltage at a fixed emitter current (output). In common emitter, they plot base current against base–emitter voltage at a fixed collector–emitter voltage (input) and collector current against collector–emitter voltage for several base currents (output). From the curves they find the input and output resistance, the current gain — alpha in common base, just under one, and beta in common emitter, much larger — and the active, saturation and cut-off regions. Repeating the work with the PNP device shows that its curves match the NPN ones with every polarity reversed.

The apparatus is used in B.Sc. physics and electronics practicals, electronic devices labs in engineering and polytechnic colleges, and ITI electronics courses. Start each run with both supplies at zero, change connections only with the supplies switched off, and stay within the transistors’ current rating.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Spare transistors — ask for the PNP and NPN types fitted and order spares with the apparatus.
  • Meter ranges — not given in the listing; request them if your worksheet uses fixed ranges.
  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which characteristics can be plotted?
Input and output characteristics of a PNP and an NPN transistor, each in common base and common emitter configuration.

What power supplies and meters are included?
Two DC regulated supplies, 0–10 V DC/500 mA/50 mA and 0–1 V DC/30 mA, and four round meters for voltage and current.

Can the common collector configuration be studied?
The listing covers common base and common emitter only. The Training Board for Transistor, linked above, adds the common collector mode.

How big is the apparatus?
It measures 15 x 8 x 4 inches, about 38 x 20 x 10 cm.

Who manufactures this apparatus?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, at its Ambala works in Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of electronic lab instruments in India, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The transistor characteristics apparatus is made in JLab’s own works rather than sourced from a trader, so colleges, training institutes, dealers and importers buy direct from the maker; each unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spare transistors come from the same works. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Malta in Southern Europe, Madagascar in East Africa, Morocco in North Africa, Ghana in West Africa and Poland in Eastern Europe are examples. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
