What Is the Binary Full Adder and Subtractor Used For?
Processors do their arithmetic with adders, and subtraction is normally carried out by the same adder rather than by a separate subtracting circuit. The trick is the controlled inverter: an EX-OR gate passes a bit unchanged when its control input is low and inverts it when the control is high. Placing EX-OR gates in the path of the second number therefore lets one control signal switch the circuit between adding that number and adding its complement, and adding the complement is how subtraction is done in complement arithmetic. On this board students set two 4-bit numbers on the switches, choose addition or subtraction, read the result on the LEDs and check it against hand calculation, which ties binary arithmetic directly to the logic that performs it. It is a compact binary adder and subtractor experiment for the arithmetic-circuits part of a digital electronics course.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Board — this 4-bit full adder and subtractor for the binary arithmetic practicals.
- Quantity — the number of boards for your digital electronics lab.
- Companion boards — the gate, logic and IC trainers listed below are separate boards that can be quoted on the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can one board both add and subtract?
The quad EX-OR gate IC works as a controlled inverter on the second number. With the control set for addition the bits pass straight to the 4-bit full adder; with it set for subtraction they are inverted, and the adder then works with the complement of the number.
What is complement subtraction?
Subtracting a number is the same as adding its complement. In one’s complement every bit is inverted; in two’s complement the inverted number is increased by one, which lets an ordinary binary adder give the correct difference directly.
What happens when a 4-bit sum is too large for four bits?
The full adder produces a carry out of its most significant stage, which acts as a fifth bit of the result. In subtraction by complement, the same carry tells whether the answer is positive or negative.
Does the board need any other apparatus?
No. It is self contained and requires no other apparatus; it runs from 230 V ±10%, 50 Hz AC mains with a built-in, IC-regulated +5 V DC supply.
What information is needed for an export quotation?
Send the number of boards, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling requirements, and the tender reference if the order is for a tender.
Who manufactures this adder and subtractor board?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of electronics training boards and laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The adder and subtractor board is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, polytechnics, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct, each board is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spares are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Samoa in Oceania, Sudan in North Africa, Armenia in Eastern Europe, the Dominican Republic in Central America and the Caribbean, and Brazil in South America. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.
