What Is the Adenovirus Infection Model Used For?

Adenoviruses carry a linear double-stranded DNA genome inside an icosahedral protein capsid with no envelope. Fibres projecting from the corners of the capsid attach to receptors on the host cell; the virus enters by endocytosis, travels to the nucleus and replicates there, leaving intranuclear inclusions, and new particles are released when the cell breaks down. The virus was first isolated from adenoid tissue, which gave it its name.

Different types prefer different tissues. Respiratory infections range from cold-like illness and pharyngitis to bronchitis and pneumonia in young children; pharyngoconjunctival fever is linked with poorly chlorinated swimming pools; epidemic keratoconjunctivitis is a highly contagious eye infection; and enteric types cause diarrhoea in infants. Adenoviruses spread by droplets, hands, shared towels and contaminated surfaces. Modified adenoviruses are also used as vectors to carry genes in gene therapy and some vaccines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the adenovirus model show?
Adenovirus infection, as its title states. The parts, labels, size and material are not listed, so ask JLab for a description and photo with your quotation.

How does it differ from the Adeno Virus Model?
The Adeno Virus Model presents the virus particle itself, the standard example of a non-enveloped virus with an icosahedral coat; this model’s title focuses on infection. Ask JLab what each shows if you need both.

Why do adenoviruses survive well on surfaces?
They have no lipid envelope to be damaged by drying or detergents, so handwashing and surface cleaning matter during outbreaks.
