What Is the Mycoses Model Used For?

Cutaneous mycoses are caused mainly by the dermatophytes Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton, fungi that feed on keratin and so infect skin, hair and nails but rarely invade deeper. The infections are called ringworm or tinea and are named by site: tinea capitis on the scalp, tinea corporis on the body, tinea cruris in the groin, tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) and tinea unguium of the nails. They spread by contact with infected people, animals, soil or shared combs and towels, and typically form scaly, itchy rings that clear in the centre. Candida can also infect moist skin folds and nails.

Subcutaneous mycoses begin when soil fungi are pushed under the skin by a thorn, splinter or other injury, so they are seen most in farm workers and people who walk barefoot. Sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix, produces nodules that spread along lymphatic channels. Mycetoma — Madura foot, named after Madurai in India — may be fungal or bacterial and causes a swollen limb with draining sinuses that discharge grains, while chromoblastomycosis forms slowly growing warty lesions. Skin scrapings examined in a potassium hydroxide (KOH) mount and cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar are standard laboratory steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the mycoses model cover?
Cutaneous and subcutaneous mycoses, as its title states. The parts, labels, size and material are not listed, so ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.

How do cutaneous and subcutaneous mycoses differ?
Cutaneous infections stay in the keratinised skin, hair and nails and spread by contact; subcutaneous infections develop in deeper tissue after the fungus has been implanted through an injury.

Which JLab model covers all the fungal groups?
The Classification of Pathogenic Fungi Model, linked below, which sets out the groups from superficial to systemic and opportunistic mycoses.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a biology lab equipment manufacturer in India incorporated in 2017, with its works on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is produced there rather than sourced from a trader, so buyers order factory-direct. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Albania in Southern Europe, Qatar in the Middle East, Argentina in South America, Mexico in North America and Cameroon in Central Africa.
