What Is the Millivolt and Milliamp Source Used For?

A thermocouple produces a small DC voltage, in the millivolt range, that depends on the temperature difference between its junctions. Instead of heating a real sensor, a technician can feed a known millivolt signal from this source into a temperature indicator, controller or recorder and check that it reads the matching temperature from the thermocouple tables. The milliamp output does the same job for meters and instruments that take a current signal. Because the voltage source has a low output impedance of 2 ohms, its output changes little when a load is connected, and the built-in voltmeter’s input impedance of more than 10 megohms means it hardly loads the circuit it measures.

Typical users are instrumentation and control labs in engineering colleges and polytechnics, heat-transfer and thermal labs, ITI electrician and instrument-mechanic workshops, and maintenance departments that check temperature panels. Start each check from zero output, raise the setting slowly, and confirm the polarity before connecting the leads to the instrument under test.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
  • Your mains supply voltage, as the listing does not state the input.
  • Any thermocouples or a thermocouple calibration rig you want quoted with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What outputs does the calibrator give?
A continuously variable DC voltage of 0–200 mV and a continuously variable current of 0–200 mA. A front-panel control selects whether the current or the voltage output is used.

Can it also measure voltages?
Yes. The 3.5-digit display shows the output source voltage, and the listing states that an unknown external voltage can be read through the front-panel control; the built-in voltmeter has an input impedance of more than 10 megohms.

Why does a low source impedance matter?
With a voltage-source impedance of 2 ohms, very little of the set millivolt signal is lost across the source when an instrument is connected, so the instrument under test sees close to the value set.

How big is the cabinet?
75 mm high, 185 mm wide and 220 mm deep, which fits easily on a bench beside the instrument being checked.

Who manufactures it?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of digital measuring instruments and lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The calibrator is assembled in JLab’s own works, not bought from a trading house, so colleges, workshops, dealers and importers buy factory-direct; every unit is inspected visually before dispatch and repeat orders are handled by the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Slovenia in Southern Europe, Algeria in North Africa, Jordan in the Middle East, El Salvador in Central America and the Caribbean, and Eswatini in Southern Africa.
