What Is the Diode Valve Apparatus Used For?
A diode valve is the simplest thermionic tube: a heated cathode emits electrons, and a positive plate (anode) collects them. With this apparatus students increase the plate voltage from the regulated DC supply in steps and read the plate current at each step. The resulting curve rises slowly at first, where the cloud of electrons near the cathode (the space charge) limits the current according to the three-halves power law, and then levels off at saturation, when the plate collects every electron the cathode emits. The inverse of the slope of the rising part gives the dynamic plate resistance of the valve.
The experiment is part of B.Sc. physics and electronics practicals on thermionic emission and vacuum tubes, and it is a good starting point before triode, tetrode and pentode work in the same series. The 6.3 V AC output is the standard heater voltage for many small valves. Let the cathode warm up before taking readings, and switch off before touching any terminal, because the DC supply reaches 300 V.
