What Is the Tetrode and Pentode Apparatus Used For?

A tetrode adds a screen grid between the control grid and the plate; a pentode adds a further suppressor grid next to the plate. With this apparatus students hold the screen at a fixed voltage, vary the plate voltage, and record plate and screen currents on the meters. The tetrode plate curve shows a characteristic dip at low plate voltages, where secondary electrons knocked out of the plate are collected by the more positive screen, and the screen current rises in the same region. In the pentode the suppressor grid returns those secondary electrons to the plate, so the dip disappears and the plate current stays nearly constant once the plate voltage passes the knee — the reason pentodes have a high plate resistance and were widely used as voltage amplifiers.

The experiment completes the valve sequence in B.Sc. physics and electronics practicals, after the diode and triode. The 6SJ7 named in the listing is a pentode; ask JLab how the panel is wired for the tetrode readings. Let the heater warm up first, raise the plate supply gradually, and switch off before changing connections, since the plate supply reaches 300 V.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
  • Spare 6SJ7 valves and connecting leads, if required.
  • Mains voltage at your lab and delivery details for export orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can be measured with this apparatus?
The plate and screen characteristics of tetrode and pentode valves: plate and screen currents against plate voltage at a set screen voltage, read on the five round meters.

Which valve does it use?
The listing names the 6SJ7, a pentode. Ask JLab to confirm how the tetrode connection is made and whether spare valves should be included.

What supplies are fitted?
Two variable supplies, 0–300 V at 50 mA and 25 V DC at 25 mA, plus a 6.3 V AC output at 1 A, all wired to terminals.

How does it relate to the triode apparatus?
The Triode Valve Characteristics Apparatus, listed separately, studies grid control in a single-grid valve; this unit moves on to screen-grid and suppressor-grid effects. Labs usually run the two in sequence.

Who manufactures it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of physics and electronics practical apparatus, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The tetrode and pentode apparatus is made in JLab’s own works, not traded, so universities, colleges, dealers and importers buy direct; every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and later orders and spare valves are supplied by the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Brunei in Southeast Asia, Mexico in North America, Eswatini in Southern Africa, Guinea in West Africa and Croatia in Southern Europe. Tender buyers can refer to the lab tenders page.
