What Is the Thyratron Apparatus Used For?

A thyratron is a gas-filled valve with a control grid. Unlike a vacuum triode, it does not regulate its current smoothly: the grid only decides the plate voltage at which the gas ionizes and the valve “fires”. Once it has fired, the grid loses control, the voltage across the valve stays roughly constant and the current is limited by the external circuit; conduction stops only when the plate voltage is brought down. In this practical students set the grid to a series of voltages, raise the plate voltage until the valve fires each time, and plot the firing voltage against grid voltage — the control characteristic — together with the V–I curves.

The thyratron is the vacuum-tube ancestor of the SCR, so the experiment fits B.Sc. physics and electronics courses and power-electronics labs that compare the two devices. Always keep a current-limiting resistance in the plate circuit, raise the voltage slowly, and switch off before rewiring.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
  • Meters and valve — the listing does not mention built-in meters or name the thyratron type; ask JLab to confirm both, and request a spare valve if required.
  • Mains voltage at your lab and the destination for export orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What characteristics can be drawn with this apparatus?
The V–I characteristics of a thyratron valve at various grid voltages, from which the control characteristic (firing voltage against grid voltage) is plotted.

What power supplies are included?
Two DC regulated supplies: 10 V at 300 µA, and 0–25 V DC at 250 mA. The valve diagram is printed on the front panel and all connections are on terminals.

Are meters built in?
The listing does not mention meters. Ask JLab whether meters are fitted or whether you should use your own multimeters.

How does it differ from the Ionization Potential of Mercury apparatus?
Both use a thyratron valve. This unit focuses on characteristics at various grid voltages, while the ionization potential apparatus, listed separately, is set up to derive the ionization potential from the V–I curve.

Who manufactures it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics and electronics teaching equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The thyratron apparatus is made in JLab’s own works instead of being traded, so colleges, universities, dealers and importers buy it direct; each unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spares are managed by the manufacturer. JLab is registered for GST under GSTIN 06AADCJ9848D1ZE and holds Legal Entity Identifier 549300DTGS77DGYD6N03. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Lesotho in Southern Africa, Moldova in Eastern Europe, Yemen in the Middle East, the USA in North America and Sudan in North Africa. Tender information is on the lab tenders page.
