What Is the Ionization Potential Apparatus Used For?

The ionization potential is the voltage through which an electron must be accelerated to gain just enough energy to knock an electron out of an atom. In a gas-filled valve such as a thyratron, the plate current stays small while the accelerating voltage is low; once electrons reach the ionizing energy, collisions create positive ions, the space charge is neutralised and the current rises sharply. Students raise the voltage in small steps, read the current, plot the V–I curve and take the voltage at the sharp rise as the ionization potential. For mercury the accepted value is about 10.4 eV, which gives a useful check on the result.

The experiment belongs to B.Sc. and M.Sc. modern physics practicals, alongside the Franck–Hertz experiment, because both show that atoms take up energy from electrons only in definite amounts. Let the valve warm up fully before taking readings, increase the voltage slowly near the rise so the current does not run away, and switch off before changing connections.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.
  • Valve and spares — the listing does not name the thyratron type; ask JLab to state it and quote a spare if needed.
  • Mains voltage at your lab, connecting leads, and the delivery destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this apparatus measure?
It is used to draw the V–I characteristics of a thyratron valve and to derive the ionization potential from the voltage at which the current rises sharply.

Which supplies and meters does it have?
The listing gives a DC power supply of 0–3 V DC at 50 mA, a 6.3 V AC output and a 0–25 V output at 500 mA, with two meters for voltage and current. The original supply list is written loosely, so ask JLab to confirm the role of each output for your experiment sheet.

How is it different from the Thyratron Valve Characteristics Apparatus?
Both use a thyratron. The separately listed thyratron apparatus studies the characteristics at various grid voltages, while this unit is set up to find the ionization potential.

What should an export quotation request include?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling needs, and any tender reference.

Who manufactures it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of physics laboratory apparatus in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The ionization potential apparatus is assembled in JLab’s own works, not bought from a trader, so universities, colleges, dealers and importers order it factory-direct; each unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spares are supplied by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Myanmar in Southeast Asia, Morocco in North Africa, Sierra Leone in West Africa, Uruguay in South America and El Salvador in Central America and the Caribbean. For tender purchases, see the lab tenders page.
