How Does It Compare with Other JLab Amplifier Kits?

This is the kit for the field-effect transistor amplifier practical; the bipolar transistor kits cover the CE-type stage, multistage coupling and biasing.

What Is the FET Common Source Amplifier Used For?

The common source stage is the field-effect transistor counterpart of the common emitter amplifier and appears in analog electronics practicals in B.Sc. physics and electronics, diploma and engineering courses and ITI/TVET electronics trades. Students apply a small sine signal to the gate, read input and output on an AC millivoltmeter and work out the voltage gain, then step the frequency across the audio range and plot gain against frequency to find the lower and upper cut-off points and the bandwidth. The output is inverted relative to the input, and because the gate draws almost no current the stage has a very high input impedance — the main difference from a bipolar common emitter stage. Its voltage gain depends on the FET’s transconductance and the drain load.

At the low-frequency end the gain falls because of the coupling and bypass capacitors; at the high-frequency end the device and stray capacitances take over. Handle the panel with the supply off when changing connections, and keep the input signal small so the output is not clipped.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 trainers.
  • Optional instruments — an audio frequency function generator and a digital AC millivoltmeter, if your lab does not have them.
  • Mains voltage at the destination and any patch cords you want included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can be measured on this trainer?
The voltage gain and the frequency response of a common source FET amplifier. Gain is the ratio of output to input signal; the frequency response shows how that gain changes across the audio range.

How does a common source FET amplifier differ from a common emitter amplifier?
Both invert the signal and give voltage gain, but the FET stage has a far higher input impedance because its gate draws almost no current, and its gain is set by transconductance and drain load rather than by current gain.

Are a signal generator and millivoltmeter included?
No. An audio frequency function generator and a digital AC millivoltmeter are listed as optional items and can be quoted with the trainers.

What size is the unit?
The listed dimensions are 8 x 6 x 4 inches, about 203 x 152 x 102 mm.

What should an export enquiry include?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, mains voltage, any packing or labelling needs and the tender reference if there is one.

Who manufactures this trainer?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of electronics trainers and scientific instruments in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The FET amplifier trainer is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought in, so colleges, polytechnics, ITIs, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct; every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spares are dealt with by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Botswana in Southern Africa, Gabon in Central Africa, Papua New Guinea in Oceania, Togo in West Africa and Iceland in Northern Europe. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
