Plain and Tented Arches
Arches are the least common of the three pattern families, which makes them a useful contrast in class. In a plain arch the ridges form a smooth wave with no core and no delta, so there is nothing to count between them; a tented arch has a sharp upthrust or angle at the centre, which students sometimes confuse with a loop. Lessons with this model usually start with the ridge flow across the pattern, then compare it with a loop, where ridges turn back, and a whorl, where they circle. Students can then take inked prints of their own ten fingers and see how rarely arches appear in a class sample.
The same caution applies as for any pattern: pattern type is shared by many people and is used for filing and searching, while identification depends on comparing minutiae such as ridge endings and bifurcations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the model show a plain or a tented arch?
The listing names only the arch pattern. Ask in your enquiry and the quotation will state which form is supplied.
Why do arches have no ridge count?
Ridge counting runs from a delta to a core, and a plain arch has neither, so it is classified by its shape alone.
