Teaching the Loop Pattern

A loop has one core, where the innermost ridge turns back on itself, and one delta, the point where the ridges flowing round the pattern divide. Examiners describe a loop by the direction it opens: an ulnar loop opens towards the little finger, on the side of the ulna, while a radial loop opens towards the thumb. They then count the ridges crossed by an imaginary line from the delta to the core, a figure used to subdivide loops in classification systems. On the model, students can trace the type lines, mark the core and delta, and practise the counting before trying it on their own inked prints.

Students should also learn that a loop, like any pattern type, is shared by a great many people. Two prints are matched by comparing minutiae — ridge endings, bifurcations and other small details — not by pattern alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an ulnar and a radial loop?
The direction of the opening. An ulnar loop opens towards the little finger, a radial loop towards the thumb; on a lifted print the direction must be read with the hand in mind.

Is a loop enough to identify someone?
No. Pattern type narrows a search but does not identify a person; examiners compare minutiae for that.

Who makes the Fingerprint Loop Model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), in its own works at Ambala, Haryana, India.
