How Does It Compare with Other JLab Meter Bridges?

ModelConstructionListed details
This bridge (EL-SLE-4645)Four-gap; copper strips; laminated baseNine brass lock-type terminals; 24 SWG constantan wire on a wooden metre scale; 1.12 m long; jockey, lead and manual
Wheatstone Bridge with pencil JockeyFour-gap; copper strips; laminated baseListed with the same terminals, binding pieces and 24 SWG constantan wire
Meter Bridge (brass strip)Four-gap; brass strip; laminated base1.10 m x 100 mm x 50 mm; pencil jockey and lead
Meter Bridge (aluminium extrusion)Single 1 m wire on a powder-coated aluminium extrusion24 SWG bare constantan wire on a metre rule in cm and mm; 4 mm socket terminals; jockey

Choose this bridge when you want the four-gap layout with copper strips and a manual for students, as used in the standard practicals. The brass-strip bridge is a slightly shorter four-gap model, and the aluminium-extrusion bridge suits labs that prefer 4 mm sockets on a metal frame.

What Is a Meter Bridge Used For?

A metre bridge is a Wheatstone bridge in which two of the four arms are the two parts of a uniform wire one metre long. An unknown resistance X goes in one gap and a known resistance R from a resistance box in the other; a cell and key are connected across the ends of the wire, and a galvanometer between the centre terminal and the jockey. Touching the jockey along the wire, students find the balance point where the galvanometer shows no deflection. At balance X/R = l/(100 − l), where l is the balancing length in centimetres. The class 12 practicals use it to find the resistance of a given wire and then the resistivity of its material, and to verify the laws for resistances in series and in parallel.

Constantan is used for the bridge wire because its resistance changes very little with temperature. For accurate results choose R so that the balance point falls near the middle of the wire, take readings with X and R interchanged and average them, and keep the current on only while taking a reading. Press the pencil jockey gently and lift it before moving it — dragging it along the wire scrapes the wire and spoils its uniformity.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 bridges; one per practical group is usual.
  • Bench set — add a galvanometer, plug-type resistance box, plug key, cell or power supply, and resistance wire so each station is complete.
  • Spares — extra pencil jockeys and constantan wire for re-wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included with the meter bridge?
The four-gap bridge with its 24 SWG constantan wire and wooden metre scale, a pencil jockey, a lead for connections and a detailed working manual.

Are the galvanometer and resistance box included?
No. They are separate items, linked below, and can be quoted in the same enquiry so the practical set is complete.

Why does the bridge have four gaps?
The extra gaps let resistances be placed in more than one position on the bridge; the end gaps are closed by removable copper binding pieces when they are not in use, held in place by the terminals.

How are end errors handled?
The constantan wire is clamped securely to the brass end strips so that end errors are negligible. Interchanging the two resistances and averaging the readings also cancels most of any remaining end effect.

What are the dimensions?
The overall size is listed as 1.12 m x 100 mm x 50 mm including terminals, on a heavy laminated base 3/4 inch thick. Confirm the exact size with JLab if your bench space is limited.

What should an export quotation request include?
The quantity, the accessories you need with each bridge, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling needs and the tender reference if there is one.

Who manufactures this meter bridge?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) builds it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics lab instruments manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The meter bridge is assembled and wired at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct; each bridge is inspected before dispatch, and spare jockeys, re-wiring and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Sri Lanka in South Asia, Hong Kong in East Asia, Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean, Serbia in Southern Europe and Canada in North America. For institutional tenders, see the JLab lab tenders page.
