How Does It Compare with Other JLab Opto-Electronics Apparatus?
| Model | Devices and experiment | Supply | Meters and light source |
|---|---|---|---|
| This trainer (EL-AET-1470) | Characteristics of an LED, photodiode, phototransistor, LDR, photovoltaic cell and opto coupler | Two 0–10 V DC at 100 mA, variable, regulated | Three 3½-digit digital meters; external variac and 40 W table lamp |
| Characteristics of Opto Electronic Devices Kit | V-I characteristics of a phototransistor, a photodiode and an LED | 0–3 V DC / 150 mA, regulated | Two round meters; light source included |
| Photodiode Characteristics Apparatus | Photodiode current against light intensity at different voltages | 0–10 V DC / 50 mA, regulated | Two round meters; light source included |
Choose this trainer when the course covers the LDR, photovoltaic cell and opto coupler as well as the LED, photodiode and phototransistor, with readings on digital meters. The opto-electronic devices kit and the photodiode apparatus each come with their own light source and two round meters.
What Is the Opto Electronic Devices Trainer Used For?
Opto-electronic devices convert between light and electricity, and this trainer lets students compare the main types side by side. An LED gives out light when forward biased; a photodiode, a phototransistor, an LDR and a photovoltaic cell respond to light falling on them; and an opto coupler joins an LED and a light detector in one package so that a signal passes across without an electrical connection. The variac and 40 W table lamp required with the trainer act as an adjustable light source, so each detector’s current, voltage or resistance can be recorded at different light levels. These experiments form the opto-electronics part of electronic devices practicals at diploma, BSc electronics and engineering level.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Model — this six-device trainer or one of the other opto-electronics apparatus compared above.
- Number of trainers for the laboratory.
- Any of the other apparatus or companion trainers to be quoted on the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a phototransistor differ from a photodiode?
Both respond to light at a semiconductor junction, but in a phototransistor the light-generated current acts as base current and is amplified by transistor action. A phototransistor therefore gives a much larger output current for the same light, while a photodiode responds faster and more linearly to changes in light.
What is an opto coupler used for?
An opto coupler passes a signal from one circuit to another using light, with no electrical connection between them. It is used to isolate low-voltage control circuits from mains or high-voltage circuits, and its characteristic shows how the output current follows the LED input current.
Why does one current meter have a 200 µA range?
Some opto-electronic devices pass very small currents, for example a photodiode in reverse bias or a detector in low light. A microampere range lets those currents be read with useful resolution, while the 20 mA ranges cover the LED and other higher-current readings.
What other apparatus is needed?
A variac rated 0–230 V, 50 Hz at 2 A and a 40 W table lamp. JLab’s Dimmerstat Variac and Autotransformer, linked below, is a separate item that can be quoted on the same enquiry.
What information is needed for an export quotation?
The number of trainers, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling instructions, and the tender reference if the order is for a tender.
Who manufactures the Opto Electronic Devices trainer?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of electronics trainers and physics laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The opto-electronics trainer is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought in from a trader, so engineering colleges, polytechnics, dealers and importers order it straight from the maker; every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and spares are handled by the same works. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Bangladesh in South Asia, Brunei in Southeast Asia, Georgia in Eastern Europe, Ecuador in South America and Tajikistan in Central Asia. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
