What Is the Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism Model Used For?

The purines, adenine and guanine, have a double ring; the pyrimidines, cytosine, thymine and uracil, have a single ring. The two families are made in opposite ways. A purine is assembled step by step directly on phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP), using atoms from glycine, glutamine, aspartate, carbon dioxide and folate-carried carbon units; the first complete product, inosine monophosphate, is then converted to adenosine and guanosine monophosphates. A pyrimidine ring is built first, from carbamoyl phosphate and aspartate, and only then attached to PRPP to give UMP, the parent of the cytosine nucleotides. The thymine nucleotide for DNA is made from a uracil nucleotide by thymidylate synthase, and ribonucleotide reductase supplies the deoxy sugars.

Cells also save energy through salvage pathways, in which enzymes such as HGPRT and APRT recycle free bases. In humans purines are broken down through xanthine oxidase to uric acid, and high levels are linked with gout, while pyrimidines are degraded to soluble products such as beta-alanine and ammonia. A model helps students keep the two routes and their links to DNA synthesis apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pathways and enzymes are shown?
The listing does not specify them, or the size and material. Ask JLab for a description and photograph so you can compare it with your syllabus.

What is the main difference between purine and pyrimidine synthesis?
Purines are built on the sugar–phosphate from the start, whereas the pyrimidine ring is completed first and then joined to it.

OEM Manufacturer

This model is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, a manufacturer of biochemistry and biology teaching models in India, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. JLab builds it at its own works rather than buying from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order factory-direct. Its tax and entity identifiers are GSTIN 06AADCJ9848D1ZE and Legal Entity Identifier 549300DTGS77DGYD6N03. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Latvia in Northern Europe, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean, Slovakia in Eastern Europe and Taiwan in East Asia.
