Slump Test Apparatus

Product Code : EL-CACTE-9458
Jlab Export is a leading Slump Test Apparatus Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

The slump test is the everyday lab and site check on the workability of fresh concrete. This set has a slump cone 300 mm high with a 200 mm base and a handle, and a steel octagonal base plate with a carrying handle. A graduated tamping rod 16 mm in diameter and 600 mm long, with one bullet end, completes it.

Slump Practicals on a Trial Mix

Students mix a batch in the Laboratory Concrete Mixer, dampen the cone and plate, and hold the cone down firmly on the plate. They fill it in three or four layers, tamp each layer with the rod, strike off the top and lift the cone straight up. The slump is read at once with the graduated rod, from the top of the upturned cone down to the top of the slumped concrete.

Classes then note the type of slump: true, shear or collapse. Concrete from the same batch is cast into Cube Moulds, cured, and crushed at 7 and 28 days on the Compression Testing Machine. Plotting slump and strength against water content shows why extra water makes concrete easier to place but weaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do true, shear and collapse slump mean?
A true slump sinks evenly and keeps roughly its cone shape. In a shear slump part of the concrete slides away down a slant, which usually points to a mix short of cohesion, and the test is repeated. A collapse slump spreads out flat, typical of a very wet or lean mix.

How should the cone be lifted?
Lift it straight up, steadily and without twisting, over a few seconds. A jerky or tilted lift drags the concrete sideways and can turn a true slump into a shear slump. Measure the slump straight after the lift.

How is the cone filled and tamped?
Fill it in three or four layers of about equal height and tamp each layer evenly over its area with the bullet end of the rod. The rod should just enter the layer below. Then roll the rod across the rim to level the top.

Is the slump test right for every mix?
It suits plastic mixes of medium to high workability. Very stiff mixes show almost no slump and cannot be told apart by it. For those, a compaction factor or Vee Bee test gives a more useful figure.

What is the graduation on the rod for?
It lets the slump be read without a separate rule. Set the empty cone beside the slumped concrete, lay the rod across its top and read the drop down to the top of the concrete.
