How Do the Encoder and Decoder Circuits Work?

Binary-coded decimal (BCD) represents each decimal digit with four bits, so an encoder turns a decimal value into those four bits and a decoder turns them back into something people can read. The two ICs on this trainer cover both sides. The IC 7490 is a decade counter: it counts clock pulses through ten states and presents each count as a BCD code, which the four output indicators can show bit by bit. The IC 7447 is a BCD to 7-segment decoder/driver whose active-low outputs switch the segments of a common-anode display, lighting the right pattern of the seven segments for each digit.

With the slow 1 Hz clock, students can follow the BCD code on the four indicators and relate it to the segment pattern the IC 7447 produces for each digit, then use the SPDT switches to apply logic levels and the front-panel sockets to trace each connection. The same chain of counter, decoder and display is found in digital clocks, event counters and panel meters, which makes this a practical experiment for B.Sc. physics and electronics, engineering diploma and ITI digital electronics courses. The listing does not name a separate decimal to BCD encoder IC, so confirm the encoder section with JLab if your practical manual specifies one.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Encoder section — confirm the encoder arrangement if your syllabus names a particular encoder IC.
  • Mains supply — state your supply voltage, as the power-supply rating is not listed.
  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ICs are shown on this trainer?
The printed circuit diagram covers the IC 7490 decade counter, the IC 7447 BCD to 7-segment decoder and a 7-segment display.

What does the IC 7447 do?
It converts a 4-bit BCD input into the seven segment signals needed to show that digit on a common-anode 7-segment display.

What clock and indicators does it have?
A 1 Hz clock pulse and four output indicators, together with four SPDT switches for setting logic 1 or logic 0.

How does it differ from the BCD to decimal decoder trainer?
That trainer decodes BCD to ten separate LED outputs, one per digit. This one decodes BCD to the segments of a 7-segment display and adds a decade counter and clock.

Who manufactures this trainer?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of digital electronics trainers and laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This encoder and decoder trainer is made at JLab’s own works, not bought in from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers get it factory-direct, every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders come from the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the UAE in the Middle East, Hungary in Eastern Europe, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, Sudan in North Africa and Canada in North America.
