What Is the Alkanes Chart Used For?

Alkanes are hydrocarbons in which every carbon–carbon bond is a single bond, so they are called saturated; their general formula is CnH2n+2. They form a homologous series — methane, ethane, propane, butane and onwards — in which each member differs from the next by a CH2 unit and properties change gradually: boiling points rise with chain length, so the first members are gases, the middle ones liquids and the long-chain alkanes waxy solids such as paraffin wax. From butane onwards the same formula can be drawn as a straight or branched chain, which is where students first meet isomerism and the IUPAC rules of naming the longest chain and its branches.

Alkanes come mainly from natural gas and the fractional distillation of petroleum. They are fairly unreactive, but they burn readily, which is why methane (the main part of CNG) and propane and butane (the main parts of LPG) are fuels, and in sunlight they undergo substitution with chlorine. In the laboratory they can be made by hydrogenating alkenes over a nickel catalyst, by the Wurtz reaction or by heating the sodium salt of a carboxylic acid with soda lime. In India saturated hydrocarbons and homologous series are taught in the class 10 science chapter on carbon and its compounds, and alkanes in detail in the class 11 chemistry chapter on hydrocarbons. The markable, washable lamination lets teachers draw structures on the chart and wipe them off. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on this chart, so ask JLab for a preview image of the current print.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units, supplied as individual charts.
  • Organic chemistry set — Alcohols, Esters and Organic Acids are listed in the same 58 x 90 cm format for the functional-group topics that follow.
  • Molecular models — an organic molecular model set can be quoted with the chart for building the structures in class.
  • Print check — ask for an image of the current Alkanes print before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Alkanes chart teach?
It supports lessons on the saturated hydrocarbons — their general formula, homologous series, naming, sources and main reactions. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so request a preview image to see what the current print shows.

Which classes use it?
Class 10 science (carbon and its compounds), class 11 chemistry (hydrocarbons) and first-year college organic chemistry.

What are the size and finish?
The chart measures 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), is printed on 130 gsm coated art paper, laminated on both sides with 30 micron heat-sealable polyester film and hung from plastic rollers. It weighs 228 g.

Can teachers write on it?
Yes. The listing describes the surface as markable and washable.

What should an export enquiry include?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), packing or labelling requirements and any tender reference.

Who supplies the Alkanes chart?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), Ambala, Haryana, supplies it and sends quotations directly.

Supplier

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It supplies chemistry wall charts such as this one next to its own range of laboratory apparatus and molecular model sets, so an organic chemistry topic can be equipped from one source; each chart is visually inspected before it is packed. JLab exports worldwide and can deliver to buyers in every region — Laos in Southeast Asia, Taiwan in East Asia, Lesotho in Southern Africa, Liberia in West Africa and Moldova in Eastern Europe are examples. Tender details are on the JLab lab tenders page.

Organic Chemistry Charts and Models

  • Alcohols — the next functional group in the course, on a matching 58 x 90 cm chart.
  • Organic Acids — carboxylic acids in the same chart series.
  • Esters — esters, made from acids and alcohols, in the same format.
  • Organic Atom Molecular Model Set — firmly joining pieces, so built molecules can be passed around the class.
