What Is the Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Carbonate Chart Used For?

Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) is produced by passing electricity through brine, a concentrated solution of sodium chloride. Chlorine is given off at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode, leaving sodium hydroxide solution: 2NaCl + 2H2O → 2NaOH + Cl2 + H2. Because all three products are useful, this is called the chlor-alkali process. The older Castner–Kellner cell used a flowing mercury cathode, in which sodium formed an amalgam that was then decomposed with water to give pure sodium hydroxide and hydrogen; modern plants mostly use membrane cells to avoid mercury pollution. Sodium hydroxide goes into soaps and detergents, paper and rayon and is used to degrease metals, while the chlorine and hydrogen have their own uses, from bleaching powder to fuels.

Sodium carbonate (soda ash) is made by the Solvay, or ammonia–soda, process. Brine is saturated with ammonia and carbon dioxide is passed through it, so that the less soluble sodium hydrogencarbonate precipitates: NaCl + NH3 + CO2 + H2O → NaHCO3 + NH4Cl. Heating the hydrogencarbonate gives sodium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide, which is recycled. The carbon dioxide comes from heating limestone, and the lime left over is used to recover the ammonia, so calcium chloride is the main by-product. Recrystallising soda ash from water gives washing soda, Na2CO3·10H2O, used for cleaning and for removing the permanent hardness of water; soda ash itself is a major raw material for glass, soap and paper. The chlor-alkali process and the reaction that forms sodium hydrogencarbonate from brine, ammonia and carbon dioxide both appear in NCERT class 10 science (acids, bases and salts), and the complete processes in college industrial-chemistry courses. The markable, washable lamination allows notes during a lesson. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on the chart, so request a preview image if you need to check them.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — 10 units minimum, supplied as single charts.
  • Chlorine companion — the Prep. of Chlorine and Hydrochloric acid chart follows the chlorine from the same electrolysis.
  • Tender reference — quote it if the order is for a school or college tender.
  • Destination — country, port or city and delivery terms for the export quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this chart cover?
Its subject is the industrial preparation of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so request a preview image to see exactly what is printed.

Why is brine electrolysis called the chlor-alkali process?
Because it yields chlorine and an alkali, sodium hydroxide, together with hydrogen, all from one solution of common salt.

How do washing soda and baking soda differ?
Washing soda is hydrated sodium carbonate, Na2CO3·10H2O, used for cleaning and softening water. Baking soda is sodium hydrogencarbonate, NaHCO3, the intermediate of the ammonia–soda process.

Which courses is it suitable for?
Class 10 science (acids, bases and salts), senior-secondary chemistry, and college or polytechnic courses in industrial chemistry and chemical engineering.

What are the chart’s size and finish?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), offset printed in full colour on 130 gsm coated art paper, laminated on both sides with 30 micron polyester film and fitted with plastic rollers; it weighs 228 g and rolls to 58 x 4 x 2 cm.

What should an export quotation request include?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling instructions and any tender reference.

Who supplies this chart?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd in Ambala, Haryana, supplies it and quotes directly.
