What Is the Ammonia and Haber Process Chart Used For?

Ammonia forms naturally when nitrogen-containing organic matter decays, and in the laboratory it is prepared by heating ammonium chloride with slaked lime: 2NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 → CaCl2 + 2H2O + 2NH3. The gas is dried over quicklime, because it reacts with the usual drying agents, concentrated sulphuric acid and anhydrous calcium chloride. Being lighter than air and very soluble in water, it is collected by downward displacement of air in an inverted jar rather than over water. It has a sharp smell, turns moist red litmus blue and forms dense white fumes of ammonium chloride with hydrogen chloride, and its solubility is shown by the fountain experiment.

In the Haber process, nitrogen from the air and hydrogen, usually obtained from natural gas, are mixed in the ratio of one volume to three, compressed to a high pressure and passed over an iron catalyst at a moderate temperature: N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3. The reaction is reversible and gives out heat, so high pressure favours ammonia while the temperature is a compromise between a good yield and a fast enough rate. The ammonia is liquefied by cooling and removed, and the unreacted gases are recycled. Most ammonia goes into fertilisers such as urea, ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate, and into nitric acid. Ammonia is a set compound in ICSE class 10 chemistry, and NCERT class 11 chemistry uses the Haber process as its main example of Le Chatelier’s principle in chemical equilibrium. The markable, washable surface lets a teacher work through the equilibrium argument on the chart itself. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on it, so request a preview image if you need to check them.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — at least 10 units, each chart supplied singly.
  • Gas-preparation set — the chlorine, sulphur dioxide and oxygen preparation charts in this series use the same 58 x 90 cm format.
  • Tender reference — quote it for institutional or government purchases.
  • Destination — country, port or city and delivery terms for an export quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this chart cover?
Its subject is the laboratory preparation of ammonia and its large-scale synthesis by the Haber process. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so request a preview image to see exactly what is printed.

How is ammonia prepared in a school laboratory?
By heating ammonium chloride with slaked lime, drying the gas over quicklime and collecting it in an inverted jar by downward displacement of air.

Why is ammonia not dried with concentrated sulphuric acid?
Ammonia is basic and reacts with sulphuric acid to form ammonium sulphate; it also combines with calcium chloride. Quicklime, a basic drying agent, does not react with it.

What conditions does the Haber process use?
A high pressure, an iron catalyst and a moderate temperature. High pressure raises the yield, and the temperature balances yield against reaction rate.

Which courses is it suited to?
ICSE class 10 chemistry (study of compounds), NCERT class 11 chemistry (chemical equilibrium) and college courses in inorganic and industrial chemistry.

How large is the chart and how is it finished?
It measures 58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), is printed in full colour by offset on 130 gsm coated art paper, has 30 micron polyester lamination on both sides and plastic rollers, and weighs 228 g.

What does JLab need for an export quotation?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling instructions and the tender reference if there is one.

Who supplies this chart?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, Ambala, Haryana, supplies it and quotes directly.

Supplier

Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, which trades as JLab, was incorporated in 2017 and has its base on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It supplies teaching charts like this one alongside its own range of laboratory apparatus, so a school or college can order its wall charts and practical equipment together; every chart is visually inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and can ship to buyers in every region — for example Jordan in the Middle East, Uruguay in South America, Hong Kong in East Asia, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia and Moldova in Eastern Europe. Tender buyers can find details on the JLab lab tenders page.
