What Is the Sulphur Dioxide and Sulphuric Acid Chart Used For?
Sulphur dioxide can be prepared in the laboratory by heating copper turnings with concentrated sulphuric acid (Cu + 2H2SO4 → CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O) or, more gently, by adding dilute acid to sodium sulphite. It is a colourless gas with the choking smell of burning sulphur, denser than air and acidic, and it turns orange acidified potassium dichromate paper green, which is the usual test. Industrially it is obtained by burning sulphur or by roasting sulphide ores, and besides feeding sulphuric acid plants it is used to bleach wool, silk and paper pulp and as a food preservative.
In the contact process, purified and dried sulphur dioxide is mixed with air and passed over a vanadium pentoxide catalyst, where it is oxidised to sulphur trioxide: 2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3. The reaction is reversible and gives out heat, so a moderate temperature, a catalyst and an excess of air are used. Sulphur trioxide is not dissolved directly in water, which would produce a fine acid mist; instead it is absorbed in concentrated sulphuric acid to form oleum, which is then diluted to acid of the required strength. Sulphuric acid goes into fertilisers, detergents, paints and pigments, lead–acid batteries and metal cleaning, and it must always be diluted by adding the acid slowly to water, never water to acid. The compound is a set topic in ICSE class 10 chemistry, the dilution rule is stressed in class 10 science, and the full process returns in college industrial chemistry. The markable, washable lamination lets a teacher annotate the chart in class. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on it, so request a preview image if you need to check them.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units; charts are supplied individually.
- Related preparations — Prep. of Chlorine and Hydrochloric acid and Prep. of Ammonia and Haber Process come in the same 58 x 90 cm format.
- Tender or indent reference — add it if the charts are for an institutional purchase.
- Destination — country, port or city and delivery terms for an export quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this chart cover?
Its subject is the preparation of sulphur dioxide and of sulphuric acid. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so ask for a preview image to see exactly what is printed.
Why is sulphur trioxide not simply dissolved in water?
Its reaction with water is so vigorous that it forms a fine mist of acid that is hard to condense. Absorbing it in concentrated sulphuric acid to make oleum, and then diluting, avoids the mist.
What catalyst does the contact process use?
Vanadium pentoxide (vanadium(V) oxide), on which sulphur dioxide and oxygen combine to form sulphur trioxide.
How should concentrated sulphuric acid be diluted?
Add the acid slowly to water with stirring, never water to the acid; the mixing releases a lot of heat and adding water to acid can make it spatter.
Which classes is the chart suited to?
ICSE class 10 chemistry, class 10 science lessons on acids, and senior-secondary or college courses in inorganic and industrial chemistry.
What are its size and finish?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), offset printed in full colour on 130 gsm coated art paper, laminated on both sides with 30 micron polyester film and fitted with plastic rollers; it weighs 228 g.
What should I send for an export quotation?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling needs and a tender reference if applicable.
Who supplies this chart?
