What Is the Oxygen and Liquefaction of Air Chart Used For?

In the laboratory, oxygen is usually prepared by heating potassium chlorate with a little manganese dioxide, which acts as a catalyst (2KClO3 → 2KCl + 3O2), or by letting hydrogen peroxide decompose over manganese dioxide without heating. Because oxygen is only slightly soluble, it is collected over water, and it is recognised by relighting a glowing splint. Oxygen can also be obtained by the electrolysis of acidified water, which gives oxygen at the anode and twice its volume of hydrogen at the cathode (2H2O → 2H2 + O2).

On a large scale, oxygen and nitrogen are separated from air. The air is filtered and freed of carbon dioxide and water vapour, which would otherwise freeze and block the plant, then compressed, cooled and allowed to expand repeatedly until it turns into a liquid. The liquid air is fractionally distilled: nitrogen, which has the lower boiling point, boils off first, while liquid oxygen collects at the bottom of the column, and argon is separated as well. Industrial oxygen is used in steel-making, in oxy-acetylene welding and cutting and as the oxidiser in rocket engines, and it is supplied in cylinders for breathing; liquid nitrogen is used as a coolant. The separation of the gases of air by fractional distillation is described in class 9 science, the electrolysis of water in class 10 science, and both preparations again in college chemistry. The washable lamination can be marked during a lesson and wiped clean. The listing does not itemise the diagrams printed on the chart, so request a preview image if you need to check them.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units, each chart supplied individually.
  • Gas-preparation set — Prep. of Ammonia and Haber Process and the other gas-preparation titles share this 58 x 90 cm format.
  • Tender reference — quote it if the purchase is made against a tender.
  • Destination — country, port or city and delivery terms for an export quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this chart cover?
Its subject is the laboratory preparation of oxygen and its large-scale separation from liquefied air. The listing does not itemise the diagrams, so ask for a preview image to see exactly what is printed.

How is oxygen prepared in a school laboratory?
Usually by heating potassium chlorate with manganese dioxide as a catalyst, or by decomposing hydrogen peroxide over manganese dioxide, and collecting the gas over water.

How is oxygen separated from air on a large scale?
Air is purified, compressed, cooled and expanded until it liquefies, then fractionally distilled. Nitrogen boils off first and liquid oxygen remains.

Why are carbon dioxide and water vapour removed before air is liquefied?
Both would freeze into solids at the low temperatures involved and block the pipes and heat exchangers of the plant.

Which classes can use it?
Class 9 science (fractional distillation of air), class 10 science (electrolysis of water) and college inorganic and industrial chemistry courses.

What size is the chart and how is it finished?
58 x 90 cm (about 22.8 x 35.4 in), offset printed in full colour on 130 gsm coated art paper, laminated on both sides with 30 micron polyester film and fitted with plastic rollers; it weighs 228 g.

What is needed for an export quotation?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling requirements and the tender reference, if any.
